When I put a workshop together, I include information that I hope will inspire our young chefs to research each topic beyond the baking 😀
I received some fabulous photos from a parent of one of our chefs who wanted to learn more about
Día de los Muertos. As part of their research, they borrowed one of my genuinefred cutter/embossers and made sugar skull inspired salt dough faces, which they coloured with pens to make fabulous decorations 💀💕
What an amazing job and wonderful way to learn more about this celebration 💖💕 Keep up the fantastic work chef 😊💕

Día de los Muertos chocolate cookies with lemon passionfruit glaze
The baker at the Mission farmer's market has a seasonal treat during this season - gingerbread Calaveras cookies. So good! So good that Wyatt wanted to make some of our own, so I ordered a set of genuinefred sugar skull cutters and we made a half batch to test. Of course, Wyatt switched us to chocolate instead of gingerbread and he loves lemonade, so that's the icing. Sounds like a weird combo, but it's pretty good. :)
We learned a lot - add sprinkle dots after icing, definitely re-chill dough scraps before cutting, go thicker than you'd think on the icing, add lots more cocoa powder to the recipe. And maybe stick nibs on the bottoms of the skulls. We squeezed 18 cookies out of half batch, which is 6 more than I expected. I guess I rolled the dough thinner than planned (4mm), but this thickness worked out well.
Despite the many many missteps, he's thrilled enough that he wants to make two full batches this week to give away in his classes on Thursday. That's 46 cookies. 💀 Wish us luck or better yet, send help. 😂
